Coffee Does WHAT?

Apparently, coffee can prevent irregular heartbeat. I would never have thought. The Kaiser Permanente Division of Research in California says that people drinking 4 or more cups of coffee a day experience an 18% reduction in the risk of being hospitalized. I might just have to start drinking up!
Watch this video for more information on how your coffee drinking habits can actually be good for your health!
In Life, There are No Shortcuts
Posted on March 8, 2010 · Leave a Comment
“In this age, which believes that there is a short cut to everything, the greatest lesson to be learned is that the most difficult way is, in the long run, the easiest.” ~Henry Miller
For every invention and problem, there is always someone who comes up with a shortcut, and who doesn’t want a seemingly faster and easier solution? I know I do. The thing is, it’s about the journey, not the destination. We learn a lot about ourselves and the world around us by taking the journey, not by getting to where we ultimately want to go. There is no limit to how much we have the ability to learn, so always taking the “easy” way gets us nowhere in the long run.
Do you plan on taking the journey or rushing to your destination?
Beauty Myths to Look Out For
Posted on March 4, 2010 · Leave a CommentHere are some beauty myths that are, well, myths. Just because you hear about them a lot doesn’t mean there is any truth there – although a few may have some truth to them – but for educational purposes, here is a list:
1. Myth: I pluck one gray hair, multiple gray hairs will grow back in its place.
2. Myth: Cocoa butter will help get rid of stretch marks.
3. Myth: Split ends can be reversed.
4. Myth: Certain cleansers can make your pores smaller.
5. Myth: Crossing your legs causes varicose veins.
6. Myth: Teeth whiteners can damage tooth enamel. (This one is actually true!)
7. Myth: Sleeping on your back may prevent wrinkles. (True, again.)
What kind of crazy beauty myths have you been told?

Organization Tips for Apartment Living
Posted on March 3, 2010 · Leave a CommentGetting organized has always been a challenge for me. What I’ve
discovered most about myself in my attempts to get it together is that once something is put away (and by away I mean hidden in a drawer, file cabinet or closet), I am very likely never to look at it again. One day while searching through various piles I have stacked on the kitchen table, desk, shelf, every flat surface, I decided enough was enough. I started with what I knew. If this mission was going to be a success, I had to be honest with myself. The more I could leave out in the open, in plain view, the better my success rate would be. This began a series of brainstorming activities which got me so excited I started a list (another task that I dread… not so much completing the list, just making it).
My list looked something like this:
1) Shelves
2) File Sleeves
3) In/Out Boxes
4) Dry Erase Board
5) Wall Calendar
6) Rolodex
Notice how each item on my list leaves it’s contents in plain view, yet neatly contains them at the same time. Now I can have everything in front of me until I’m finished with it, then file it away into the bottomless abyss of a file cabinet “just in case” I should need it again someday.
Here’s another awesome tip one of my friends recently shared with me. She has a place where she puts things she doesn’t know where to put, a purgatory for paperwork if you will. It hangs out in limbo until one day she decides to go through it. What she found is that many things lose their importance over time and she eventually feels comfortable throwing them away. If it is something she needs again, she knows where to find it. Me? I would move an item around from room to room until I got so irritated I would throw it away, only to find out it’s something I needed the very next day. Her solution eliminates a great deal of hassle and worry.
This method works especially well for apartment life. I have a relatively small space to work with and having things accessible, yet tidy, is important to me. It makes our family life much more efficient and comfortable. Don’t get me wrong. I still battle the urge to drop and leave. But, it’s a start. What are some organization tips you’ve incorporated into your apartment that work well for you?
Inspirational Quote Monday
Posted on March 1, 2010 · Leave a Comment“Necessity is the mother of taking chances.”
- Mark Twain
If we were happy with the way things were, chances are we would never do anything. It is in the times where we feel we are in need that we are willing to go out on a limb and take chances, and I for one am grateful for that opportunity. Taking risks, much like adversity, only makes us stronger, never mind the fact that some of the best things in life can only come from taking the leap.
What successes have you enjoyed as a direct result of taking a chance?

Movie Review: Valentine’s Day
Posted on February 24, 2010 · Leave a Comment
I have been waiting to see “Valentine’s Day” for a long time, given its huge cast list, and it did not disappoint. I must say that the people I went with were less than satisfied with the experience, but for the purpose of this review, my opinion is the only one that matters!
This movie has a kind of “Love, Actually” feel in that it has several story lines woven together. In one, for example, Ashton Kutcher is paired with Jessica Alba as an (almost) engaged couple. Another interesting pairing is Jessica Biel and Jamie Foxx.
I don’t want to ruin it for everyone, so I will just say that it is worth the money to see this film if you can sit through it. It is pretty long at just under 2 hours, so at times it may seem like it’s dragging on. In the end, though, the stories resolve themselves quite well.

Saving Space
Posted on February 22, 2010 · Leave a CommentFinding a place for everything in your apartment can be tricky, so here are some tips, provided by about.com, that will help you get on your way to a cleaner and more organized apartment:
-Get rid of unnecessary clutter: Anything you feel you can’t part with but that does not fit in your space can go into storage. Prioritize, prioritize, prioritize.
-Utilize unused space: You can use under-bed storage as a good way to keep things organized and out of the way.
-Be creative: Use the materials that you have, from milk crates, curtain rods, and your trunk, to store things you can’t bear to put in storage.
